Here we go again, rain, wind, rain, gale force wind then gale force wind and rain - all day.
Started the day with a visit to the Churchill Cabinet War Rooms at Westminster (Clive's Steps). Very, very interesting. How lucky we were that Winston was in power to control the WW2 War effort, imagine call me Dave, Edward or Nick dealing with such situations?
Had no idea of the extent of this tunnel system holding the cabinet rooms, communication etc.
Following this visit we made our way to HMS Belfast which played a major part in theWW2 War effort. This monster of a ship is as impressive in steel as the Victory is in wood. An unbelievable ship, how on earth does it stay afloat?! Sadly was not able to hang about outside much as the rain was just hammering it down plus the wind was getting stronger by the minute.
After a short break in the ships rest room over a cuppa and flapjack it was time to move on.
To the West End now for a meal before an evening show at the Aldwych Theatre (Stephen Ward). Having lived through the Profumo affair this show meant a fair bit to us. A very good story line, true to what happened back then in the sixties.
What a day, pretty tired by the time the show had ended, weather was even worse on leaving the theatre. Cab was ready so meaning a pretty quick exit but could not have imagined what happened next. Nearing the NHM there was this almighty explosion, cars swerving and a cyclist knocked from his bike. The cab swerved missing him by inches, metal parts flying about, what on earth had happened. A monster of a hotel sign full of fluorescent tubes had come adrift in the high winds. It was truly a very scary moment and shook us somewhat.
